Milne Technologies attends the Great Lakes standard operating procedures acoustic workshop

The standard operating procedures (SOP) is a suggested procudure for how to design and implement a hydroacoustics survey and provides a general guide for estimating fish population abundance from hydroacoustics data in the Great Lakes. More information on SOP.

The workshop in Michigan was sponsored in part by the Great Lakes FIshery Commission and was designed to instruct attendees in the application of SOP. The program included in-field demos, instruction on the analysis of calibration and noise data, and classes on the application of cluster analysis and geostatistics.

Milne Technologies at the 2008 American Fisheries Society Meeting in Ottawa

At the meeting, Scott Milne presented work on the behavioural ecology of lake trout measured using the combination of biotelemetry and multi-beam hydroacoustics. More on this project

Erin Dunlop organized a symposium on the adaptive changes of fish stocks in response to harvest. The symposium featured presentations by several notable scientists including Jeff Hutchings and David Conover. For more about the symposium visit here. Erin also presented the results of her spatial model designed to study the influence of marine protected areas on the evolution of life-history traits and fisheries yield.

Surveys of Myrt and Hood Lakes continue in 2008

Milne Technologies and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Canada returned to Myrt and Hood lakes (Thunder Bay, Ontario) to continue hydroacoustics surveys and standardized gill netting. The lakes were also surveyed in 2007 before the opening of winter fisheries for lake trout. The purpose of the 2008 surveys and netting were to monitor and evaluate the impact of the newly opened fisheries on the resident fish community.

Presentation at SEAFACTS

Milne Technologies participated in the SEAFACTS 2008 Hydroacoustics Science Meeting in Bergen, Norway. Scott Milne presented research on the integration of hydroacoustics and biotelemetry technologies to study the foraging behaviour of lake trout. Download the abstract.

Following the SEAFACTS conference, Milne Technologies' staff completed certified courses on the use of Echoview® software for hydroacoustics data analyses.
